About
Dr. Vandana Sreedharan
My Educational Journey
I have always been guided by an enduring commitment to excellence, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong learning. Each stage has strengthened my conviction that education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but the foundation for innovation, leadership, and meaningful societal impact.
My school education itself instilled in me the values of discipline, integrity, and perseverance. Pursuing Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut nurtured my passion for engineering and introduced me to the transformative role of technology in addressing real-world challenges. At the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), I developed a strong inclination towards geotechnical engineering and research, which culminated in my doctoral studies at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. My Ph.D. experience at IISc shaped my approach to scientific inquiry, equipping me to pursue research with rigor, creativity, and purpose. Subsequently, my postdoctoral research at The University of Queensland, Australia broadened my global perspective and reinforced the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing sustainable engineering solutions.
My pursuit of learning has continued through executive and leadership education, including the Advanced Programme in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Leadership at IIM Indore and the CMI Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management, completed through the AICTE–UKIERI Leadership Development Programme in collaboration with Dudley College, UK. These experiences enriched my understanding of ethical leadership, institutional development, and the broader societal responsibilities of higher education.
Looking back, I view my educational journey not as a sequence of qualifications but as a continuous process of growth. It has shaped my philosophy as an educator, researcher, and academic leader—one committed to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, mentoring future engineers, and creating sustainable solutions that benefit society.
Career Story
My professional journey has been shaped by a passion for engineering, a commitment to education, and a belief that knowledge should create lasting value for society. Every stage of my career has offered new opportunities to learn, lead, and contribute.
I began my career as an Assistant Engineer in the Harbour Engineering Department, where I gained invaluable field experience and a practical understanding of infrastructure development. Working on engineering projects taught me that sound technical decisions are rooted in both scientific principles and real-world realities. This experience continues to influence my teaching and research, enabling me to bridge theory with professional practice.
My transition to academia marked the beginning of a deeply fulfilling journey. During my early years of teaching at NIT Calicut, I had the opportunity to strengthen my foundations in teaching and research, shaping my approach as an educator and inspiring my lifelong commitment to academic excellence. Joining Government College of Engineering, Kannur as an Assistant Professor in 2001, provided a platform to translate that vision into action through teaching, research, mentorship, and institutional development.
A defining milestone in my career was pursuing my doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. The experience transformed my research perspective, instilling scientific rigor, critical thinking, and an enduring passion for innovation. This journey was further enriched through my postdoctoral research at The University of Queensland, Australia, where international collaborations broadened my outlook and strengthened my commitment to sustainable and globally relevant engineering research.
Alongside teaching and research, I have been entrusted with several administrative and leadership responsibilities, culminating in my role as Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering. These roles have strengthened my leadership, strategic planning, and institution-building skills, while reaffirming my belief that academic leadership is about empowering people, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities for growth.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been mentoring young minds. Guiding research scholars, supervising doctoral research to successful completion, mentoring student innovators and startups, and witnessing the achievements of my students have been among my greatest professional satisfactions. Their success remains the most meaningful measure of my own.
Beyond my institution, I have had the privilege of contributing to engineering education at the state level through my association with SHE (Scheme for Her Empowerment under DTE). What began as an institutional initiative to empower girls in engineering education evolved into the SHE programme, which grew into a state-level movement. Serving as its State Coordinator has been one of the most fulfilling leadership experiences of my career, enabling me to collaborate with institutions across Kerala and contribute to strengthening engineering education and student development on a much larger scale.
My professional journey has also extended beyond academia through consultancy assignments, where I have applied research and technical expertise to address practical engineering challenges. These engagements have enriched my understanding of industry needs and reinforced my belief that meaningful engineering solutions emerge when academia and professional practice work together.
Looking back, I see my career not as a series of positions, but as a continuous journey of learning, service, and impact. It is this journey that continues to inspire me to advance sustainable engineering, promote excellence in higher education, and contribute meaningfully to society through teaching, research, innovation, and academic leadership.
My Teaching Philosophy
Teaching has never been just a profession for me—it is my purpose. Every time I step into a classroom, I see not just students, but young minds with dreams, potential, and the ability to shape a better future. Being part of that journey is both a privilege and a responsibility that I cherish deeply.
Throughout my career, I have come to realize that the most meaningful lessons are not always found in textbooks. They are discovered through curiosity, thoughtful questions, real-world experiences, research, and the courage to learn from failure. My goal has always been to create a learning environment where students feel inspired to think independently, innovate with confidence, and grow into compassionate and ethical professionals.
My experiences as an engineer, researcher, consultant, mentor, and academic leader have taught me that education is most powerful when it connects knowledge with purpose. Whether in the classroom, the laboratory, the field, or through research and innovation, I strive to help students see engineering not merely as a profession, but as a means to improve lives, protect our environment, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The greatest joy of my career is not found in publications, projects, or positions—it is in seeing my students discover their own potential, achieve success, and return years later as confident professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Their accomplishments are the milestones that matter most to me.
I continue to learn every day from my students, colleagues, and the world around me. That is what keeps me inspired. If I can ignite curiosity in even one student, instil confidence in someone who doubts themselves, or encourage a young engineer to use knowledge with integrity and compassion, I believe I have fulfilled my purpose as an educator.
Beyond Engineering
If there is one thing I hope people remember about me, it is that I have always tried to bring together engineering, humanity, and art. I believe that while engineering teaches us how to build, it is empathy, creativity, and integrity that give purpose to what we create.
Throughout my life, I have remained deeply rooted in my values while embracing change with an open mind. I value freedom of thought, respect diverse perspectives, and believe that critical thinking is the foundation of meaningful innovation. I am naturally curious, constantly learning, and always eager to explore new ideas and emerging technologies.
More than my professional achievements, I hope to be known as someone who leads with warmth, listens with empathy, and encourages others to believe in their potential. I aspire to create not only better engineers, but also thoughtful individuals who lead with compassion, courage, and a commitment to making a positive difference. For me, success is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by the lives we touch and the values we leave behind.
Outside the lab and the classroom, that same instinct finds its way into ArtHive — paintings that move between Warli folk geometry, neurographic lines, and quieter, soulscape-like work.
